Getting Involved

The amount of planning and coordination needed to make this program a success is unbelievable.  When you compound that with the fact that the founder is putting it all together from half way around the world, it makes it even more difficult.  It's no surprise that he cannot do this alone.  So, we are calling upon the off-road community to pull together for this cause.

What's needed are groups of off-road enthusiast from around the country who would be willing to put together a trail run while the program passing through their area.  With the exception of Moab, Tellico, and the Rubicon Trail, all the events will last 2 days and be held on a weekend.

Many people have asked how to get involved and help out with the program.  The following is a way to do just that.

Clubs:  First, go to the Event Schedule page and see if your State is listed.  If so, see if there is an event host listed for your State.  If there is, then the position has been filled.  However, you can still contact the club hosting the event via the WFTW forum and offer your assistance.

If there is not an event host listed, then read below to learn what is expected from a club hosting an event.  If you can meet those expectations, and would like to assist us with showing our country's wounded military men and women a great time, please have your club's President send an email to event@wheelersforthewounded.org.

Here are some things to consider prior to volunteering to be Event Hosts/Trail Guides:

1.  Your club should have knowledge of an off-road park and/or enough trails to keep us busy for two days.  Your club should also know the location of a campground located near the event site.  It is okay if your club is based in a location other than where the event will take place, as long as your members do not mind the drive to get there.  Let's show our honored guests the best your State has to offer!

2.  Your club should practice responsible wheeling and follow the guidelines set forth by Tread Lightly! These will be family friendly events.  Children are welcomed and therefore proper behavior will be expected.  Due to vehicles being involved (not to mention the law) there will be no alcohol allowed while on the trails.  Alcohol consumed responsibly off the trails will be permitted if the law and/or the off-road park where an event is held allows it to be.

3.  Due to the many different types of off-road vehicles that will be participating, your club should not discriminate between make/model of vehicles.  Yes, it is okay if you have the word "Jeep," "Toyota," "Hummer," etc, in your clubs name, but the event will be open to all types of vehicles.  In other words, it will be a "run what your brung" event.

4.  Due to articles and pictures of the events being published in Four Wheeler magazine, your club should approve of themselves, their vehicles, the club's name, and possibly their own names being in that magazine as well as other publications and news media outlets (newspapers, television, websites, etc). Everyone participating in an event will be required to sign a media release form for this purpose.

5.  Your club will be responsible for contacting your State's VA hospitals, military posts, VFW Posts, the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, and other similar organizations to spread the word to wounded military members so that those who would like to participate will have the opportunity to do so.

6.  Your club will need to host two to four charity trail runs between now and the main event depending on the size and extravancy of your event.  100% of the funds raised at charity events will be used at the main event for your State for things such as food, entertainment, park fees, insurance, etc.  The chairty events will also help spread the word about the program and give the club an opportunity to practice run some of the trails they might like to run during the main event.

Individuals:  Go to the Event Schedule page and find your State or the closest State to you where an event will be held.  If there is a club listed next to the State, then contact that club via the WFTW forum and offer any assistance you are willing to provide.

If there is not an event host listed, contact off-road clubs in your State to see if they would be interested in getting involved with this program.

Everyone:  As much as the founder would like to be able to converse with each and every participant, that would be impossible considering there will be thousands of participants around the United States and because of his limited communication access due to being in Iraq.  You are encouraged to contact the event host for your State to let them know if you want to offer assistance or if it's just to let them know you will be participating in their event.  You can get in touch with the club hosting an event by posting your offer of help in that State’s section of the forum.  That being said, the founder will answer every email sent to him at jason@wheelersforthewounded.org in a timely manner.
